Atlantic Tripletail

Latin Name:  Lobotes surinamensis

General Size:  18" x 10"

The Atlantic Tripletail is often found off-shore associated with floating sargassum weed. Reaching a maximum size near 3.5 feet, the tripletail is in the family Lobotidae of which there is only one representative. Unlike most fusiform-shaped pelagics, this fish is slow-moving and will often float near the surface amongst weeds or structure. They are found in tropical and subtropical waters of all oceans and are an excellent food fish. Lighter-colored juveniles can be observed in mangroves floating motionless on their sides mimicking a dead mangrove leaf.
