The bonefish is highly sought after by flyfishermen on the clear, shallow flats of both the east and west coast of the United States and South America. Found in the family Albulidae this silver fish can be caught in shallow waters over sand and mud as they search for worms, crustaceans and mollusks. They are not recommended as a food fish due to the numerous intermuscular bones and the possibility of ciguatera poisoning. In addition to gills they have an airbladder which can be filled by gulping air at the surface and used to combat low ambient oxygen levels.
