Dolphinfish

Latin Name:  Coryphaena hippurus

General Size:  45" x 24"

The dolphinfish are an extremely popular sportfish in Florida and can be caught year-round. Dolphin have a special affinity for floating structure as well as floating sargassum known as a "weed line". These voracious predators are found in the family Coryphaenidae and have been known to experience growth rates of up to 29 inches in the first year of life. Females produce up to one million eggs per spawning event and may spawn 2- 3 times per year. Females are commonly known as cows and males are called bulls (such as the one shown).
