Porgy, Whitebone

Latin Name: Calamus leucosteus

General Size:  12" x 9"

The whitebone porgy can be found in the family Sparidae along with sheepshead, pinfish and the campeche porgy. This species can be found in the Western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico feeding on armored benthic invertebrates. Their front incisor teeth are excellent for scraping animals attached to the substrate while their rear molarform teeth and pharyngeal jaw (located in throat) are ideal for crushing their prey.
