Spotted Scorpionfish

Latin Name:  Scorpaena plumieri

General Size:  9" x 4"

The spotted scorpionfish (family Scorpaenidae) is commonly observed on reefs of Florida. Caution is advised when swimming near the reef as they are very well camouflaged and if one is punctured by their dorsal spine(s) a powerful venom will ensure that the diver's day will be ruined. They are not known to be fatal but the pain will be enough for the victim to wish for death.
