Squirrelfish

Latin Name:  Holocentrus rufus

General Size:  13" x 5"

Found in the family Holocentridae the squirrelfish is one of 65 species in this family. They are heavily armed with many sharp fin spines including bony projections arising from the gill plate. They are not popular gamefish but can be eaten. They typically feed on crabs and brittle stars off the reef at night and stick close to caves and holes in the reef during the day.
