Whitetail Deer

Latin Name:  Odocoileus virginianus

General Size:  Standard

Inhabiting a wide range of habitats from the arid thorn bush of West Texas to the swamplands of South Florida these hoofed game animals are the target of many a hunting trip. The average male whitetail deer will weigh in at around 200 pounds however there is a record of a Minnesota buck that came in at over 500 pounds. Interestingly most deer will only live two to three years in the wild, however some have seen up to 20 years of age. Whitetail deer have a keen sense of sight and hearing but it is their sense of smell that benefits them most. Their sense of sight is approximately 10,000 times better than an average human thus keeping them out of harms way most of the time. The antlers, as shown above, are some of the fastest growing tissues in the animal kingdom and are being studied to better understand that process.
